I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream For Big Gay Ice Cream

Big Gay Ice Cream was a summer experiment gone right. In June of 2009, founders Douglas Quint and Bryan Petroff, began cruising the streets in the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck and it became an instant success. So, in 2011 they opened their first store in New York City's East Village. Big Gay Ice Cream is all about "serving 'plain-old soft serve' with fun, electric toppings," and that my friends, is why we love them!

Not only is this place a super fun spot, but so is their website. On the site you see photos of people enjoying their ice cream and when you scroll over the photo the picture and ice cream change. It's is so funny and clever. Check it out:

The New York Post, Time Out NY, NBC, ABC, Logo, Daily Candy, New York Magazine, The Huffington Post, The Rachael Ray Show, Food Network and CBS Radio rave about Big Gay Ice Cream and I guarantee after your first visit, you will to. Plus, you get a very welcoming greeting from this fine lady:

Everything on the menu has a quirky name to fit the funky atmosphere. They have shakes, ice cream sandwiches, sundaes, floats and cones and with names like Salty Pimp, Cococone and Mermaid you can't go wrong. Check out the full menu here.

During our visit, Jill had a peppermint ice cream sandwich and I had the Mermaid; vanilla ice cream, key lime curd, crushed gram crackers and whipped cream. YUM!

Bottoms Up With Blue Bell

 I discovered Blue Bell Ice Cream last summer when Alex and I were living in Texas and since then I have been on the look out for it everywhere I go. Last week when we were in Myrtle Beach I saw a Blue Bell Ice Cream sign and I practically ran to it. This is my favorite ice cream and I am really excited to tell you all about it.

Blue Bell Ice Cream was first made in 1930 and they have been cranking out half gallons and pints of ice cream ever since. Unfortunately for us New Yorkers, Blue Bell Ice Cream can only be found in 26% of the nations supermarkets with products sold in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wyoming. However, I am filling you in on this amazing treat so next time you take a trip South you will discover it for yourself.

 My favorite Blue Bell Ice Cream flavor is Moo-llennium Crunch. It is "classic vanilla ice cream with a combination of dark chocolate chunks, creamy caramel chunks, roasted pecan halves, chopped almonds and walnut pieces." Yummy! Next time you head south check Blue Bell Ice Cream out for yourself!

Pineapple Mango Snowball

     Eat, Sleep, Scoop. That's their motto and they're sticking to it. Bonkey's Homemade Ice Cream and Snowballs is "striving to keep "mom & pop" shops alive in small town America," and I am so glad they are. Bonkey's Homeade Ice Cream and Snowballs has been open since 2004 and gets its name from the owners Bonnie and Keith.

     The menu at Bonkey's has so many options that it would take you over an hour to read them all. They have everything to satisfy your sweet tooth like ice cream, snowballs, old fashioned candy and chocolate covered cheesecake on a stick. The snowballs topped with marshmallow are my favorite and they have over 100 flavors to choose from. There are way too many things on the menu to list so  check out the full menu here.

     Bonkey's is located at 28 E. Franklin Street, New freedom, PA 13749. They are open Monday-Friday 3-9pm and Saturday and Sunday 12-9pm. Go get your snowball on!

Serendipity 3 is The Place For Me

Serendipity- the art of making happy discoveries, or finding the unexpectedly pleasant by chance. That definition pretty much sums up what happens to every person who walks through the Upper East Side doors at Serendipity 3.

Serendipity 3 has been enticing taste buds for over fifty years. And over those years it has quickly become a favorite among celebrities and New Yorkers alike. It's a small Upper East Side gem with a huge  waiting list almost every night. Don't worry though, as long as you have a few hours to spare they will get you in and you can experience serendipity for yourself.

Although Serendipity 3 has a full breakfast, lunch and dinner menu, what I want to focus on is their sweet treats. Let's start with one of there most talked about items: "The Original, Outrageously Divine, Frozen Hot Chocolate." Its made up of chocolate pieces, hot chocolate mix, milk, sugar, whipped cream and chocolate shavings- and probably contains your calorie intake for the day. For the exact recipe click here. This tasty treat makes Oprah want to "dance on the chandeliers!" It can be all yours for only $8.95

Next is something so delicious it needs to be shared. The "Can't Say No" Sundae is a tower of humble pie, ice cream, banana, hot fudge and whipped cream. After the two hour wait, my best friend Annie and I were ready to feast! Again, all these calories can be yours for only $15.

Lastly, I want to tell you about the most expensive sundae that money can buy. This sundae is so intense that they need 48 hours notice prior to you ordering it. It's called the Golden Opulence Sundae. It's so fantastic that holds a Guinness World Record. I mean if you can afford to eat gold you might as well enjoy it at Serendipity 3. 

Serendipity 3 is located at  225 East 60th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues New York, NY 10022. They are open Sun-Thur 11:30am to midnight, Friday 11:30am to 1:00am and Saturday 11:30am to 2:00am.

Milkshake Madness

     Summer is just around the corner and you know what that means...camping! Well in PA we go camping, I think the camping equivalent for New Yorkers might be a weekend at the Hamptons- both equally great in their own way. Camping reminds me of summer and roasting marshmallows. Since I haven't found a place that I can roast marshmallows here in the city, besides in my microwave, I had to look elsewhere to satisfy my craving. That's where Bill's Bar and Burger comes in.

     Bill's Bar and Burger has been a hit with New Yorker's for years with their locations at Rockefeller Plaza and in the Meatpacking District. Their food is know to be fantastic, especially their burgers, but where they really excel is in their milkshake making skills.

Introducing the Campfire Milkshake. It's a little piece of heaven for only $6.95.

     The Campfire Milkshake contains vanilla ice cream, milk and marshmallows. The best part of the shake is at the top- a thick layer of toasted marshmallow. YUM. They use a fire torch to make the marshmallow gooey and delicious. It's the perfect topping for the most perfect summer milkshake. If you don't have time to sit down and enjoy the goodness, you can take it on the go by ordering at their fast and friendly take away counter. I am a huge fan of that option.

16 Handles is Freakin' Fantastic

       Every time I enter 16 Handles I feel like I am walking into another world. A futuristic world where everything is lime green and pink and topped with whipped cream- it's a bit like being in Katy Perry's "California Girls" music video. With its neon decor, friendly staff and frozen yogurt toppings galore this is what I would consider a little piece of heaven.

     I discovered this self serve frozen yogurt shop when an enthusiastic New Yorker told me "its a no-brainier, you have to go!" So, I walked the ten blocks from my house at the time and experienced it for myself. That was two years ago and I am still raving about this place and never miss my weekly stop for some sweetness. Thank goodness I discovered 16 Handles when I did because I just can't imagine my life without it.

     What makes this place so freakin' fantastic is unlike most fro-yo shops in NYC, this is self serve and you pay by weight. After you pile as many flavors of frozen yogurt in your cup as you like, you get to put your inner chef to the test at the toppings bar. There are over 30 toppings for you to create your fro-yo masterpiece. Everything from fresh fruit to wet walnuts. After you have reached fro-yo perfection you weigh it, pay then enjoy!

      My signature is huckleberry yogurt topped with cheesecake bites, kiwi, mango, chocolate pieces and raspberry sauce. You haven't lived until you've tried 16 Handles. This definitely one of my go to spots when I have a friend come to visit as well.
